WHO WE ARE

About Us

Kangra, Himachal, Bilaspur, and Chamba---the regions where gods reside---are famous for their natural beauty and unique colours throughout the nation. But the people here had to move out of these places and into famous cities within and outside Himachal Pradesh to find a means of living.

Most of them moved to Mumbai, also known as the Kubera City of India. Their population in this city significantly increased between 1940 and 1950. They mostly resided in Kalvadevi, Girgaum Road, Khattar Galli, Phanaswadi and Ramwadi.

At the dawn of 1950, some of these people in the city decided to create an organisation of their own to organise themselves and help each other.

To give shape to this idea, 50 gentlemen met at 38 Ramwadi, Kalvadevi on Sunday the 26th of October 1952, gathered in the garage of Thakur Raghunath Singh and Thakur Baldev Singh. In this meeting, Shri Ram Singh Ji Thakur was elected as the head and thus, Kangra Mitra Mandal was born.

A second meeting was held on 28th October the same year to elect the first officers of the board. They made a legislative committee, constituting Raghunath Singh Ji Thakur, Deshraj Dogra & Tegnath Jar, to make the constitution of the board.

Our Pillars

Unity and cooperation were the inspirations behind the formation of this
mandal. The leaders have considered it as an ideal and given it as a gift
to every mandal member to this date.

Our Mission

The objective of forming this mandal was to increase the cooperation
between the migrant residents in a huge and busy city like erstwhile Bombay.
The mandal would solve the problems of sorrow, illness & unemployment and
celebrate happiness etc. They would also make arrangements regarding the housing problems of the migrant members.

Our Initiatives

During Kangra Floods

The mandal has always understood that its priority is to help the people and government of every part of the country during natural crises and calamities. They have also honoured the martyrs and warriors as per their culture and rituals. On one such occasion in 1953, known infamously as the Kangra floods, the mandal collected funds and sent them to the famine-stricken people of Kangra.

To Encourage Social Celebrations

Since its formation, the mandal has been a spearhead in making arrangements for major festivals of Himachal Pradesh like Lohri, Holi, Baisakhi, and Janmashtami. Why? So that migrants residing in Mumbai, away from their homeland, can pause their hectic lives and join in on the sweet celebrations to socialise with each other and gather refreshing and sweet memories. The interim committee formed on 28th October 1952 formed the constitution of the board. The birth of this mandal has been celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm on 26th October every year since then. Since the beginning, the mandal has been making strong efforts not only to promote Dogri and Himachali language and culture but also to help disseminate it in a huge city like Mumbai. To this effect, the mandal has always been promoting Pahari singers in its festivals.

Strengthening The Community

Originally, only the people from Kangra were part of this mandal but as time passed, the people of Mandi, Suket, Vilaspur, Chamba and Jammu were also allowed to be part of the mandal as committee members. To bring this change into effect, the mandal’s constitution was amended on the 21st of March 1954. To make the Kangra Mitra Mandal more secure and strong and to support its members in tough times, the mandal passed a resolution to establish a Cooperative Credit Society.
